“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” (also known as John Wick: Chapter 3 or simply John Wick 3) is a 2019 American neo-noir action thriller film starring Keanu Reeves as the titular character. It is the third installment in the John Wick film series, following John Wick (2014) and John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). The film is directed by Chad Stahelski[5] and written by Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams, based on a story by Kolstad. It also stars Halle Berry, Laurence Fishburne, Mark Dacascos, Asia Kate Dillon, Lance Reddick, Anjelica Huston, and Ian McShane. In the film, ex-hitman John Wick finds himself on the run from legions of assassins after a $14 million contract is put on his head.

The first film was always meant to begin a series, and a third installment was announced in June 2017. Much of the returning cast and crew was confirmed in February 2018, with new members joining that May. Filming began that month and lasted through November, taking place in New York City, Montreal, and Morocco.”John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” was theatrically released in the United States on May 17, 2019, by Summit Entertainment. It has grossed $289 million worldwide, surpassing the entire gross of the second film in just 10 days, and received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the action sequences, visual style, and Reeves’ performance.[6]

Less than an hour after the conclusion of the previous film, former hitman John Wick is now a marked man and on the run in Manhattan. After the unsanctioned killing of crime lord and new member of the High Table Santino D’Antonio in the New York City Continental, John is declared “excommunicado” by his handlers at the High Table and placed under a $14 million bounty. On the run from assassins, John reaches the New York Public Library and recovers a crucifix necklace and a “marker” medallion from a secret cache in a book. He fights his way through numerous assassins populating New York City until he reaches The Director, a woman from his past who operates a theater. She accepts the crucifix as a “ticket” for safe passage to Casablanca, Morocco and has Wick branded to signify that he has used up all his favors.

Meanwhile, an adjudicator with the High Table meets with Winston, the manager of the New York City Continental, and the Bowery King, the leader of a network of vagrant assassins. The Adjudicator admonishes both for helping John Wick kill Santino D’Antonio, and both are given seven days to give up their offices or face serious consequences. In Casablanca, John meets Sofia, a former friend and the manager of the Casablanca Continental. He presents his marker and asks Sofia to honor it by directing him to The Elder, a high-ranking member of the High Table, so that he can ask to have his bounty waived. Sofia takes him to an assassin named Berrada, who tells John that he may find the Elder by wandering through the desert until he cannot walk any longer. In exchange for this information, Berrada asks for one of Sofia’s dogs; when Sofia refuses, he injures the dog. In retaliation, Sofia shoots Berrada, and the duo fight their way out of the kasbah and flee into the desert.

I have a confession: I did not love the first John Wick movie. If you don’t like action movies in which loner heroes fight their way through a succession of gangland enemies to get revenge for some deep wrong or betrayal, then you won’t find this a surprising opinion. But I do like such movies, and Wick was hailed by connoisseurs of the genre as a highly effective return to form, its success a bright spot in a landscape where special effects have overtaken the old choreography of fisticuffs.

Which, in many ways, it was. But I had a peculiar gripe about the titular main character, a former hitman played by Keanu Reeves in his finest stone-faced style, who carves his way through the Russian mob after a Mafioso idiot scion beats him up and steals his car and kills . . . his . . . dog. (The dog was a gift from his late wife, so the movie isn’t just a canine-lover’s manifesto.)

The heart of this particular genre’s appeal is watching somebody do the impossible — fight an entire world of enemies singlehandedly, and win — but without the superheroic gifts that dominate the defining genre of our time. There are two ways this can happen: He can be an everyman, like Bruce Willis’s character in Die Hard, who under extraordinary circumstances uses his brains and guts and luck and gumption to outwit as well as outfight his enemies. Or he can be someone with a very special set of skills — the martial arts of Jackie Chan, the assassin’s talents of Liam Neeson’s Taken dad. In either case, he’ll still have to take more punishment than any normal human being could. But in both cases you’re given some reason to suspend your disbelief that he could pull it off.

And what has kept me from investing fully in Mr. Wick, now back for his third outing in John Wick: Parabellum, is that I don’t know how he does it. He is not a beleaguered everyman in the John McClane style, that’s for sure. Instead, we are told again and again, usually in hushed, Russian-accented tones, that he’s a nearly supernatural force, a Baba Yaga, a bogeyman. Well and good. But then in the action scenes that follow, he never seems that much more capable than any of his enemies; he just fights them one on one, or sometimes one on two or three, and always comes out just barely ahead.

The glass office scene with John Wick battling the group of ninja-assassins was undoubtedly one of the biggest fight scenes of the film series, so it comes as no surprise that the whole sequence and set took an incredible amount of effort to plan out. In an interview with afters & befores, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”‘s concept illustrator Alex Nice revealed that the entire set was actually constructed in virtual reality first to enable a better planning process, explaining that conventional concept art wasn’t sufficient for such an action-packed scene from director Chad Stahelski.

“It was immediately apparent that a set like this is just such a challenge in planning, especially for a director like Chad who does such high action choreographed scenes,” Nice said. “You can imagine how confusing it is, like, where’s the glass wall compared to the other glass walls? Just getting your bearings mentally, even with the plans, was really a big challenge at the very beginning.”

The final VR 3D model of the entire set included proxy fighters and even the ability to mock-fight. This was made possible using Epic Games‘ Unreal Engine 4, along with other proprietary tools the concept illustrator built alongside his partner Matan Abel. The video above — posted by Nice himself — takes you through a virtual tour of the VR set built for the blockbuster. The physical set ultimately cost $4 million USD to build.
